Getting your first tattoo should be exciting, but it is normal to have questions about the appointment. A little preparation can make the session more comfortable and help your artist work efficiently.

Every tattoo and every client is different. Your artist’s instructions should always take priority, but the following guidance will help you arrive prepared for most tattoo appointments.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

• Get a full night of sleep. Being rested can make it easier to remain comfortable and still during the session.
• Eat a complete meal. Have a balanced meal before arriving, especially if your tattoo session may last several hours.
• Drink water. Begin the appointment properly hydrated, but avoid consuming excessive amounts immediately before the session.
• Shower and wear clean clothing. Good personal hygiene helps maintain a clean and professional tattoo environment.
• Bring valid photo identification. The studio must verify your identity and eligibility before beginning the tattoo.
• Bring approved reference material. Use clear images that explain the subject, mood, detail, and visual direction you want.

What Should You Wear?

Choose clean, comfortable clothing that allows your artist to reach the tattoo placement without stretching, rolling, or holding fabric out of the way. Keep in mind that tattoo ink may permanently stain clothing.

For example, shorts can be useful for thigh and lower-leg tattoos. A sleeveless or loose-fitting shirt may work better for an upper-arm tattoo. For a back tattoo, your artist can recommend clothing that provides access while helping you remain appropriately covered.

What to Avoid Before Getting Tattooed

Avoid tanning, prolonged sun exposure, and anything that may leave the intended tattoo area burned, irritated, scratched, or damaged. Your artist may need to postpone the tattoo if the skin is not in suitable condition.
